All over our website, you will see peacocks – both in the images and our logo and colors. Several folks have asked the question “What’s up with the peacocks?” and it’s such a fun story that it’s worth sharing.

The Bravery of a Real Peacock

When Dr. Jen was coming up with a name for her coaching business in 2016, she lived in South Jordan. Her property, and those surrounding her, was agricultural. There were horses, cows, chickens, goats, and even a llama in the surrounding pastures. There was also a peafowl pair who lived directly behind her. They were beautiful to watch, especially the peacock with his gorgeous feathers.

Sadly, the peahen died a few months after Jen & her family moved in. Peafowl mate for life, so you can only imagine the sadness of the peacock, who moped around for months looking for his mate. His pitiful cries could be heard for blocks, and he could often be found on Jen’s deck looking in the windows.

The following spring, Jen went out to feed her chickens. As she approached the pasture, she heard quite a ruckus. The peacock was in the middle of the hen’s feeding area, tail feathers fully fanned out. Peacocks also ‘shake’ their tails when trying to mate or get attention of females, which makes an interesting sound. The hens were all ignoring him, but the rooster was in a tizzie – how dare this male try to move in on his women!

It was a laughable site for many reasons. Obviously the chickens had no interest in mating with this peacock, but he was SO sure of himself! He wasn’t stopped by the limitations of cross-species mating rituals! He just KNEW that someone in this flock of birds would want to be with him. Roger the Rooster was crowing to show dominance, but the peacock was unphased….

This happened every night that spring. The peacock would come over and strut his stuff, Roger would crow, the hens would eat and ignore them both. Jen was fascinated by the display. And mostly, she was awed by the bravery of someone who was just doing his thing, knowing that eventually, someone would see his worth and choose him.

He became an inspiration to Dr. Jen. His bravery, consistency of action, and willingness to put himself out there were exactly the kind of energy she needed to start a new business. And so, he became the mascot for Third Eye Family Solutions as she created a name and began seeing clients.

The Deeper Meaning of Peacocks: Perspective and Magic

Two other things emerged when Jen was working with images of peacocks in her work. First, was the obvious: the ‘eyes’ on a peacocks feathers are said to be a way to both attract mates and scare off predators. As Third Eye Family Solutions is all about bringing an extra set of eyes to your life and family, it was a perfect symbol to use!

Second, was the less obvious: there are many traditions that describe peacocks as magical and divine. A quick Google search will find the words wholeness, grace, dignity, self-expression, confidence, love and respect, just to name a few. Not only were these wonderful words to have behind a business, but they were exactly what Dr. Jen wanted to create with and for her clients. One website even talks about peacock walking beside you to let you know that all of your dreams are possible – just like we do with our clients!
