Childbirth
Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth. Ina May Gaskin. Overview of the natural process of childbirth.
The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth. Henci Goer. In depth details about all aspects of birth, including standard medical practices. Includes lots of research describing pros and cons of the various choices to be made.
Birthing From Within. Pam England and Rob Horowitz. This is the next best thing to working with us to prepare mentally for childbirth.
Sacred Pregnancy: A Loving Guide and Journal for Expectant Moms. Anni Daulter. For those who love to journal, this is a beautiful book that will walk you though 40 weeks of sacred practice.
Click HERE for a PDF of “Birth in Pop-Culture: How the Media and Pop Culture Fail to Prepare Women for the Empowering Experience of Childbirth”
Childbirth Support – Find a Doula. I highly recommend having a doula present at your birth. http://www.dona.org/ has a “Find a Doula” feature to get you started.
Childbirth Classes: There are many wonderful classes that will help you prepare for childbirth. I’m a big fan of The Bradley Method. Many midwife offices offer childbirth preparation classes as well.
Education
The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education. Grace Lewellyn. In our opinions, a MUST read for every teen, regardless of whether they stay in school, home school, or choose another path.
Trusting Children: A Look at Sudbury Education Around the World. Sego Lily School Press. A collection of essays describing various Sudbury Schools around the world, how Sudbury schools work, and why you should consider them. This link will email the school, who will send you a book for $5 to cover shipping.
Free at Last: The Sudbury Valley School. Daniel Greenberg. Provides a clear overview of what self-directed learning in a working democracy looks like.
The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing. Alfie Kohn. Explains – using solid research – why most homework is more detrimental than beneficial.
Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling. John Holt & Pat Ferenga. A good primer for those choosing to homeschool.
Got Game: How the Gamer Generation is Reshaping Business Forever. John C Beck, Mitchell Wade. Concerned about video games? This book may give you a different context for the positive side of gaming.

Natural Living
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Marie Kondo. In working through this process, we have seen a huge difference in how we feel, and how our homes feels. If you don’t love it, or need it, it doesn’t belong in your life!
You Can Heal Your Life. Louise L. Hay. Explores the relationship between emotions and the body, including affirmations for illnesses and disease.
Parenting
Playful Parenting. Lawrence J. Cohen. How to bring play into connection with your children.
Connection Parenting: Parenting through Connections instead of Coercion, Through Love instead of Fear. Pam Leo. Another great book that can help you connect authentically with your children, and move away from the punishment/rewards dynamic.
Killing Monsters: Why Children NEED Superheroes, and Make-Believe Violence. Gerard Jones. When my boys were little, I struggled with the violent play and everything becoming a sword or a gun. This book gave me a different perspective.
Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishment to Love and Reason. Alfie Kohn. Great resource for parents who want to stop the cycle of rewards that lose meaning, and raise children who are intrinsically motivated. (Punished By Rewards is another favorite by this author)
Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life. Peter Grey. While this book could easily be filed under education resources, we feel that the philosophy of encouraging play is important for families participating in ALL types of schooling.
Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More than Peers. Gordon Neufeld & Gabor Mate. There are many books out there for Attachment Parents of young children. Year ago, this was the first one I came across that talked about teens and tweens. I believe it is a critical factor in why my 13 and 16 year olds have no problem saying they love me & hugging me in public.
Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting. Myla & Jon Kabat-Zinn. We think this book speaks best to those who already have, or are beginning to undertake, a daily mindfulness or meditation practice. Regardless, it is a beautiful way to look inward while dealing with the challenges of parenting.
Making Parenting as Easy as Possible
Personal Development
The Four Agreements. don Miguel Ruiz. If you want to learn how to move powerfully through your life, while empowering others, read this book. Then read it again, and again.
The Surprising Purpose of Anger. Marshall Rosenberg. The language of Non-Violent Communication is a great way to feel heard, and have those around you feel hear as well. There are many NVC books and tools available. This short book is one of my favorites, as it dissects anger and what is truly behind feeling angry.
Radical Honesty: How to Transform Your Life by Telling the Truth. Brad Blanton. This book is described as “not another kinder, gentler self-help book”, and that is very honest. If you have a hard time saying what you feel, this book is for you.
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Betty Edwards. We feel that connecting to our inner artist is vital for full self-expression. If, like us, you read that and thought “I’m not artistic at ALL,” we suggest doing this book based course.
Landmark Education. I cannot recommend these programs enough. I promise, you will transform your view of life in 3 days.
Relationships
Eight Dates; Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love.
If you want to create or restore connection, and give your relationship the attention and foundation it needs to thrive, get this book and work through the conversations. They are life-changing!
Learn your Love Language. Gary Chapman defined 5 languages in which we give and receive love. Knowing how you best feel love expressed, and how to express love in a way that best communicates love to your partner, is a huge gift. Take the test to find out yours.
